People who buy buildings, land and motor vehicles in 2016 pay local taxes in 2017

Local taxes for buildings, land and cars purchased this year will be paid by the new owners in 2017, for 2016 the taxes will be paid by the sellers, as they had them in property on December 31, 2015, KPMG director Daniel Pană says.
“We have a pro-rata for the buildings, land and motor vehicles acquired during the year. The taxpayer will pay any taxes for the year 2016, for a full year, for everything he owned on December 31, 2015. For example, if I’ve bought a house in January 2016, I will pay tax for it only in 2017, the former owner will pay the tax in 2016. The same goes for land and motor vehicles,” Daniel Pană, director for Tax Assistance Services KPMG Romania.
Changes were operated according to the entry into force of the new Tax Code and the new Tax Procedures Code.
The deadlines for paying local taxes and fees have remained the same, namely March 31 and September 30.
For example, if a person has sold a house in January 2016, he/she will pay on March 31 and on September 30, 2016 the tax for that home, as it was in his/her property on December 31, 2015.
However, local councils will be able to increase the maximum rates of local taxes provided by the Tax Code by 50%, instead of 20% hitherto.
