PM Dancila meets in Brussels EP President Tajani, Commissioner Cretu

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila met on Wednesday the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani (photo 1), as part of the official visit to Brussels to discuss with the EU leaders.

In a joint press conference, Antonio Tajani said he has met a former colleague, who has returned for several moments to discuss the cooperation with the institutions in Brussels.

The President of the European Parliament stressed the importance attached to the coming Romanian presidency of the European Council, mainly for the adoption of EU’s multiannual financial framework. “We have discussed about the need that the European budget increases. (…) Another issue was the Brexit, the vote in EP will mean the end of this process and cooperation with the Romanian presidency will be very important in this regard,” Tajani said.

Premier Dancila also discussed with the European Commissioner for Regional Development, Corina Cretu (photo 2), who expressed concern on the development of the projects regarding regional hospitals. “Unfortunately, the building of the three hospitals has huge delays,” the Commissioner said.

Cretu added that, considering the current situation, it is unlikely that the works start in 2019 and that such an ample project in Romania needs the attention of all those involved.

The Commissioner also pointed to the delays within the Regional Operational Programme, as Romania risks losing European funds worth up to EUR 831 billion by the end of the year.

“2018 is of crucial importance for the future cohesion policy. I have confidence Romania will speed up the implementation and will support the Commission’s proposal for a stronger and more modern cohesion policy,” Corina Cretu said.

PM Viorica Dancila said after the meetings, for Romania TV, that the basis of the European dimension of the governance has been laid, as she had promised in the very first day when invested as Premier.

“I believe that the openness, the constructive and transparent approach with the European leaders can have returns, as Romania will hold the European Council presidency as of January 1, 2018,” Viorica Dancila said.

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila was in Brussels on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Wednesday Dancila met EC President, Jean-Claude Juncker, and the European Council President, Donald Tusk.

On the agenda of talks are issues related to the consolidation of the European project, domestic security, EU neighbourhood, the European Economic and Monetary Union and the prospects of European elections in 2019 will be approached.
