PM Dăncilă to leave on Thursday for the Vatican. The visit was kept secret until the last minute

Prime Minister Viorica Vasilica Dăncilă made a surprising announcement at the beginning of the Government sitting on Thursday: “This afternoon I will leave and pay a visit to the Vatican, where I will be received in an audience by His Sanctity, Pope Francis.”

It is a visit that was kept secret as the one in Israel, where she left together with PSD chairman Liviu Dragnea. The official visit is scheduled until Sunday, hotnews.ro reports.

Such a visit is prepared long before, but it was announced on the very day of departure, just as it happened in the case of the visit to Israel. This time too, the PM will not be accompanied by any journalist.

“Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă will pay a visit to the Vatican during May 10-13, 2018. On May 11, 2018, the Prime Minister will be received in audience by His Holiness Pope Francis, and then will have a meeting with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of His Holiness. The PM will also meet the Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta, Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto, and the President of the Sant’Egidio Community, Marco Impagliazzo. The visit of the Prime Minister of Romania to the Vatican takes place on the basis of very good bilateral relations, in the year of celebrating the Centenary of the Great Union of Romania, which will be marked at the Holy See by a series of cultural and academic manifestations. The programme of the visit also includes a meeting with Romanian students studying in pontifical universities, to be held at the ‘Pio Romeno’ Pontifical College,” a Government release informs.

PM Viorica Vasilica Dăncilă was accused of secrecy by President Klaus Iohannis during her visit to Israel.

On the other hand, Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu announced on Wednesday, in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, that a visit by the King of Jordan to Romania has been agreed and that efforts are being made to seal a tour for Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and probably Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
