Center-right MEP Siegfried Mureșan (EPP/PMP) will be European Parliament’s (EP) general rapporteur for the general budget of the European Union for 2018, the EP Committee on Budgets decided on Thursday. Siegfried Mureșan is the first ever Romanian Member of the European Parliament to hold this position.
MEP Mureșan is the Vice-Chair of the Committee on Budgets and has already worked on the EU budget. In 2016, he was EPP Group’s shadow rapporteur for the general budget of the European Union for 2017, and was part of the European Parliament delegation to the Conciliation Committee where the 2017 EU Budget, amounting to EUR 158 billion, was approved.
“It is an honour to take up this role. Negotiating the EU annual budget, which amounted to EUR 155-160 billion in the past years, is a very important mission and it comes with a great degree of responsibility. It is essential to continue financing EU’s priorities of economic growth through investments in infrastructure, research, innovation and youth employment, but also on strengthening the security of the European citizens,” said the center-right MEP Siegfried Mureșan.
The Romanian MEP wants Romania to absorb as much European funds and, therefore, aims to provide the necessary money in the EU budget to make payments on time to invest in important areas of our country, ziare.com informs.
“The Romanian Government should also do its job and absorb this money. I will work closely with the authorities in Bucharest to ensure that this objective is fulfilled by both parties,” Siegfried Muresan said.
The European Parliament’s general rapporteur for the general budget of the European Union, sets EP’s political priorities for the EU budget and negotiates, in the name of the Parliament, with the EU Council Presidency and the European Commission the final version of the EU annual budget.
Muresan is the Vice-Chair of the Committee on Budgets of the European Parliament, substitute member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, substitute member of the Committee of Inquiry into Emission Measurements in the Automotive Sector and a member of the Delegation to the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee.
Siegfried Mureșan also serves as spokesman of the European People’s Party.
