Traian Basescu said at the Summer University in Izvoru Muresului that “the way forward for Moldova is the union with Romania”, claiming that the neighbouring country “is not protected against the surprise of Russia’s intentions to maintain it in Moscow’s sphere of influence”.
“The reality is that – as president I’ve said it to President Voronin and to interim President Ghimpu and to President Timofti – the solution for the Republic of Moldova is the union with Romania. It is a solution for the future of equal interest to Romania and to R. of Moldova. Sure, it would be dishonest to say that such a union can be done without taking into account Transnistria and that it will be impossible to import a frozen conflict into the European Union, on the one hand. On the other hand, we must admit Transnistria was not a part of Romania during history. Trying to hide the historical and geopolitical realities is a mistake and the building of reunification of Moldova with Romania can be based only on realism, and realism tells us a frozen conflict cannot be imported into the EU,” said former President Traian Basescu.
He said that “many believe that Romania would do a favour to Moldova if the union takes place” but this approach is wrong.
“Romania is not doing a favour to Moldova when wanting to achieve union, if this would become an official target of the Romanian state. Official declared only when the officials in Chisinau want it too. The truth is that Romania equally needs Moldova. The larger a state in the EU in terms if population, area and resources, the more important it is and the more weight it would have. Many ask what about but money, about the cost? This is not a matter of money, but of the future. Romania’s future, a sound future, may be based on reunification with Moldova,” Basescu said.
He mentioned that currently Moldova is torn apart by two options – independence and the option of union with Romania, adding that “things got balanced in recent years in this regard”.
The former president said that now is the time for the unification of Romania and Moldova, as unrest in the region “shows that where there is no solidarity, anything can happen.”
The Summer University in Targu Mures is attended by 80 leaders of Romanian associations, personalities from Romania’s neighbourhood as well as from Diaspora. The main issue of debate: “Romania and Romanians at the EU and NATO borders”. The Summer University is also attended by former President Traian Basescu, the leader of the Social Romanian Party Mircea Geoana and the President of People’s Movement Foundation Cristian Diaconescu.
