British Ambassador, Paul Brummell, ends term in Bucharest, says farewell to Romania

Seen by many the most popular foreign Ambassador in Bucharest, British envoy Paul Brummell paid a last visit through the capital city on Thursday, on board of a London double-decker bus, accompanied by journalists. He revealed some of his favourite tourist attractions and sites connected to the UK, stiri.tvr.ro informs.

The British Ambassador talked about his favourite Romania music (Andri Popa by Phoenix – our note) and his secret, i.e. he returns to the UK with several kilograms more in weight.

Asked about his weight, Paul Brummell joked: “It’s a state secret. Unfortunately, I have more kilos than when I arrived here.”

Speaking about Romanian food, Ambassador Brummel said he likes ‘mamaliga’ (Romanian polenta – our note) and that in Iasi he ate lots of ‘bulz’ and stew.

Paul Brummell was appointed Ambassador to Romania in 2014 and has quickly become known for being eager to find out about traditions, to recite poems in Romanian and to attend many public events. One night he even slept on the streets, literally, to draw attention to the needs of homeless people.

His last message for Romania: “The important thing is that reform should support the fight against corruption and the rule of law.”

Paul Brummel will be replaced by Andrew Noble, recently the UK Ambassador to Algeria. He had worked in Bucharest before 1989.
