CCR postpones by one month the debates on the Criminal Code

The Constitutional Court (CCR) has postponed the debates of the referrals filed against the amendments to the Criminal Code, Realitatea TV private broadcaster informs, quoting sources. The Constitutional Court was to discuss the unconstitutionality appeals filed by President Klaus Iohannis, by PNL, PMP, USR and by the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ – Supreme Court) regarding the amendments to the Criminal Code.

In the referral to the CCR, the President pointed out that both laws were adopted by Parliament in violation of the Constitution and contain several unconstitutional provisions.

The law amending the Criminal Code was challenged to the Constitutional Court by the ICCJ and by PNL and USR.

The draft bill to amend the Criminal Code was adopted during the Parliament’s extraordinary session, by the Chamber of Deputies plenary, with 167 votes in favour, 97 votes against and 19 abstentions.

“The Judge-Rapporteur has failed to submit the report and the written conclusions. He reasoned that he did not have the necessary time because of the complexity of the file,” the sources say.
