The former chief of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), George Maior, has confirmed in a testimony on Tuesday before the parliamentary committee on SRI activity the parties that took place at the SRI offices on Romania’s National Day, the SRI Day, birthdays, including politicians and officials such as Victor Ponta, Liviu Dragnea, Laura Codruta Kovesi, Livia Stanciu, committee chairman Claudiu Manda said.

After the six-hour hearings, George Maior (photo), currently Ambassador to the US, said he has answered all questions from the members of the committee and that some of them were related to the relation between SRI and Justice, reports.

“It’s been an interesting, detailed discussion, with a general message. I reiterate de idea of legality of the deeds and that SRI has turned into a powerful institution of the Romanian state and that I’ve fulfilled my mandate. Questions were asked about the relation between SRI and Justice, if corruption is a national security issue, as defined by the CSAT, about the meetings between Government members and politicians, about people coming to the committee regarding the press,” George Maior said.

In his turn, committee chairman Claudiu Manda said that “a theme related to parties or events hosted by SRI offices was approached. Maior has confirmed that such events were reportedly held on the occasion of the National Day of Romania, the SRI Day or his or his first deputy’s birthday or name day. He also confirmed the list of the attendees. We had previously got other names as well all Romanian force units from the Public Prosecution Service, police, intelligence services, courts, political party leaders, Cabinet members, some of which made it to the public space. He confirmed them, saying that some came more often, others seldom, but the people from the public space, he confirmed them, saying that there is nothing wrong with that, with being an informal discussion between people who have formal and institutional relations,” Manda said.

Asked about the people whom George Maior has confirmed to attend these informal events, Manda mentioned members of the Government, Victor Ponta and Liviu Dragnea, but also former head of the Supreme Court Livia Stanciu and chief prosecutor of the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) Laura Codruta Kovesi.

“At those socialising events, mentions were made of heads of institutions. They included members of the government – (former) Prime Minister Victor Ponta, (former) Deputy Prime Minister Liviu Dragnea (…) In addition to the names of government members, mentions were made of heads of the STS (Special Telecommunications Service), the SIE (Foreign Intelligence Service), the SPP (Special Guard and Protection Service), intelligence institutions – DGA, DGIPI -the Prosecutor’s Office upon the Supreme Court. I cannot confirm about the incumbent Prosecutor General Augustin  Lazar, but people in the management of prosecutor’s offices, prosecutors, courthouses- in this case Mrs Livia Stanciu – I also said about Mrs Kovesi,” Manda said.

PSD’s Dragnea: Maior has failed to reveal lots of things

PSD chairman Liviu Dragnea said on Wednesday that former SRI chief George Maior “has failed to reveal a great deal” during the hearings, adding that when he “will have a seat in the committee” he will say, in turn, “many things”.

“Mr. George Maior failed to reveal many things yesterday, unfortunately, and I think he did not do well. When I go to the commission, I’ll say many things. (…) I do not threaten anyone, I’m still sending signals to Mr. Manda, and maybe I will give him a present,” PSD chairman Liviu Dragnea said.
