President Klaus Iohannis will receive the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the Prime Ministers of Hungary, Viktor Orban, of Belgium, Alexander De Croo, and of Croatia, Andrej Plenkovic, at the Cotroceni Palace on Wednesday, political sources told Digi24.ro.

The visit of the European officials takes place at the invitation of President Klaus Iohannis, the quoted sources also showed.

The visit is also announced on the agenda of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, where the purpose of the meeting is specified: consultations on the strategic agenda of the EU for the next five years.

Every five years, EU leaders agree on the EU’s political priorities for the future, setting the EU’s strategic agenda. It is a collective effort led by the president of the European Council, where leaders discuss and make decisions together, according to the European Council’s website.

The visit takes place amid upcoming European Parliament elections in June and after President Klaus Iohannis had voices his intention to run for the position of Secretary General of NATO, a position to which Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte also aspires.
