Ciolacu asks Orban to promote Romania’s full accession to Schengen

Romanian PM Marcel Ciolacu met today with his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban and asked him for full support in the Schengen issue. Hungary is currently holding the presidency of the EU Council this semester.

“I had an effective discussion with Viktor Orban. We have a pragmatic approach to issues of common interest: connectivity, energy security, prevention of illegal migration. We asked the Hungarian presidency of the EU Council to act as an honest intermediary to promote the EU’s strategic agenda and Romania’s full accession to Schengen,” Ciolacu posted on X, former Twitter.

Romania is in Schengen starting Sunday, March 31, but currently only with air and sea borders. After repeated postponements and 17 years after joining the European Union, Romanians can travel freely in the countries of the Schengen area.

Romanian prime minister also said that a strategic project has also been agreed upon – a high-speed railway connection Budapest-Bucharest.

“We agreed to start the feasibility studies on the implementation of a flagship project at the bilateral level – the Budapest-Bucharest high-speed railway link, a strategic project of regional interest, with an impact on the railway networks in the Central European region,” Ciolacu further announced.

Ciolacu met Orban at a protocol villa in Bucharest, not at the Government’s HQs.

Hungarian PM Viktor Orban came to Romania to participate in the Summer University at Băile Tuşnad this weekend.
