Crin Antonescu, validated by PNL as the presidential candidate
The Liberals have validated Crin Atonescu’s candidacy for the presidential elections in May, in the party’s National Council. The Social Democrats are due to vote on the same at a congress at the end of next week, while the UDMR has already shown its support for the Coalition candidate through the voice of its president, Kelemen Hunor.
“I have not and do not claim to be a savior or necessarily the only one who can lead this battle. But I have no excuse if you and others ask me to do so, I have no excuse to refuse. The battle you are putting me in charge of is one that we did not suspect, that we did not expect. It is not a battle, it is a shock, it is a specter of cataclysm,” declared Crin Antonescu, in his speech to the liberals. He also said that “he is not running for the PNL, for me, but what unites us in running for the citizens of Romania are some common ideas and aspirations.”
PNL President Ilie Bolojan stated that Romania needs a president who is experienced, mature, dedicated to democratic values and belonging to the Western space.
The PNL leader pointed out that Crin Antonescu is part of the front ranks of the PNL and that, to some extent, Romania’s entry into NATO and the European Union is also due to him.
The Liberal chair claims that the situation in which Romania has reached, which is in a crisis of confidence in those who lead the country, is due to “unfulfilled promises” or “lack of transparency and lack of communication”.
The Secretary General of the PNL appealed to all elected liberals to campaign for Crin Antonescu. Adrian Veștea believes that Crin Antonescu is the candidate with the greatest chances of winning the presidential elections, citing several polls conducted by the parties in the Coalition. “There are sociological assessments that we have made, as well as the rest of the parties in the Coalition. There are assessments that clearly show that Crin Antonescu, in addition to the fact that he will enter the second round, is also the candidate who has every chance of defeating the populist candidate and becoming the president of Romania”, stated the secretary general of the PNL, Adrian Veștea,
