Former premier and PLUS leader Dacian Cioloş has been elected the chairman of the new Liberal group in the EP, Renew Europe, a group formed around French President Emmanuel Macron after the EP elections on May 26.
The group consists of ALDE, “En marche” movement” and USR-PLUS Alliance.
Dacian Cioloş has been elected by 65 votes out of 106.
The former technocrat Romanian PM, previously considered the main favorite in the race for the new group helm, enjoyed the endorsement of the Spanish, German and Dutch MEPs, but also of Emmanuel Macron’s support.
“Congratulations to @CiolosDacian, our new Group leader!” read a tweet of the Renew Europe Twitter page.
After being elected as group leader, Dacian Cioloş posted on Facebook: “The Presidency of the Renew Europe group is just a step in the political construction we have been thinking for the past two years. It is a major step, but it is only the beginning of our project”.
PLUS leader stated that his party will keep on bringing “Europe to Romania as much as possible”.
“We have proved we deserve the confidence at the May 26 elections, we’ve proved we are part of the relevant political forces in Europe. We’ll continue to bring as much Europe as possible to Romania through our activity in Brussels and through the MEP offices that we’ll open countrywide. Now we are moving to the next step by starting the domestic political construction in order to provide the Romanian citizens with the future they deserve!”, Dacian Cioloş further said.
