Several chickens, some of them dead, have been thrown in the courtyard of the Christian Liberal Alliance HQs on Tuesday. The birds had noted hanging on their head saying, “I am Iohannis,” “I am afraid of the debate”. The incident occurs after the staffs of the two contenders in the presidential race failed to reach any agreement on a future electoral debate. While PSD wanted to organize four debates at four different TV stations, the Liberals expressed wish for a single debate on a neutral ground.
Later on, several employees of the National Sanitary Agency equipped with white overalls and plastic gloves and socks gathered the chickens and transported them by dumpsters.
The electoral gag took place right before Klaus Iohannis held a press conference together with the Joseph Daul, the European Popular Party (EPP) at ACL HQs. Iohannis lashed out saying the incident is a death threat, as the chicken with his head cut off was a symbol used by the Nazis on the 40s. “This electoral campaign became abominable. Mr. Ponta, you have just broken a record to undertake the most crappy campaign since 1990. You are probably not familiar with this symbol. It is an old symbol, a direct death threat. The last time someone used this symbol was in 1940 and they were the Nazis. If you throw a chicken with its head cut off in his courtyard it is a direct death threat (….) I have never thought we would ever come to this kind of electoral campaign in Romania to use symbols related to death and death threats. Mr. Ponta, maybe now, at the last moment, you will realize that it is wrong to blow Romania up just to become President”, Iohannis told the press conference.
In her turn, PNL spokesperson Alina Gorghiu said the party notified Police on this incident. “We assist at an extremely violent campaign that horrifies and disgusts me. We notified the Police to take the necessary steps to identify those who were brokering this move. I think PSD is a sneak thieves’ party,” Gorghiu said.
In retort, PSD MP Florin Iordache said “PSD is not involved in this incident by any means.” In his opinion, ACL representatives were the ones to have thrown the chickens in their own courtyard to create “a media story” and “to pose as victims” in front of the citizens.
