Deva City Hall will cut wages by 20 per cent and will lay off approximately 150 employees after the new mayor, Florin Oancea, found that last year’s wage fund was three times higher than the money allocated for investments, glasul-hd.com reports.

According to the data presented by Mayor Oancea, in November 2017, Deva City Hall, Hunedoara County, paid salaries worth RON 3.4 million, almost double against the same month in 2016. The wage fund allegedly reached EUR 10 million while the institution’s own revenues do not exceed EUR 25 million per year, and the projected investments for the past year did not exceed EUR 3 million.

Deva City Hall now has an approved organisational chart of 902 positions, of which 843 are taken over by employees. In 178 cases, people are paid from the state budget (people with disabilities or doctors working in schools). The remaining 665 are hired by the City Hall.

“Ten years ago I do not know if there were 400 employees overall. What happened: every mayor who had the office left the organisational chart as it was, but he also brought people in. We have now a bigger number of employees than Oradea, a city with 220,000 inhabitants (three times more than Deva – our note) and similar to the City Hall of Arad. There are many departments in which the staff chart is over-sized. For example: the canteen – 13 employees – Director, Chief of department, four Chefs, store-women, a driver – all in all 13 people. Their activity: 67 bags to include one bread, two cans and one bottle of cooking oil. They do not prepare food. Two people can make 67 such bags in half an hour,” said mayor Florin Oancea, according to the quoted source.
