DNA checks the signature lists of the candidates running for city halls
Anti-corruption prosecutors on Wednesday asked the District 1, District 4 and Bucharest Electoral Bureaus documents referring to several candidatures filed for the local elections due on June 5. The candidature file of Liberal Alexandru Nazare running for the District 1 city hall has been sent to the National Anti-corruption Directorate, including the lists of signatures in support of his campaign.
The same documents and lists of signatures were asked from other electoral bureaus, with prosecutors probing into alleged corruption and electoral crimes. Nobody has been prosecuted so far.
The DNA investigation comes after two weeks ago prosecutors were searching the electoral signature lists filed for the candidature of Marian Vanghelie, running for the District 5 city hall.
In retort, Alexandru Nazare says in a Facebook post that the DNA action is no single case in Bucharest and several persons are targeted.
“I am waiting patiently for the investigators’ conclusion. I have nothing to hide,” he said, while accusing that the investigation was to be tendentiously used by his political foes from the Social Democrat Party.
DNA was notified in this case following a complaint filed by an NGO a month ago.
At the same time, the National Liberal Party Bucharest branch retorted that prosecutors should also extend their investigation on the other candidates running in the local elections.
“Regardless of the political color of the candidates, the state institutions should watch that the law is observed and the local elections are taking place in good conditions,” reads a press release by PNL Bucharest.
