PSD chairman Liviu Dragnea denied on Monday that he had ever been to a birthday party of former SRI director George Maior or of the former intelligence deputy director Florian Coldea, thus denying Maior’s recent statements. He also denied he would have met George Maior during the weekend, as reported in the media. Dragnea says he will reveal all details in the SRI committee sitting.

“I haven’t met Maior in the weekend. The last time I saw him was last year, we exchanged some words at the diplomats’ meeting,” Dragnea said.

Asked if he attended the parties at the SRI’s HQs, as the former intelligence head Maior had told the control committee last week, Liviu Dragnea said he would go for hearings in the SRI committee when he is called and he would say all, completely new things.

You must be patient, you will find out things you haven’t even thought of, but after I go for hearings in the committee, for I want to be an institutional matter, not cancan. I want some things to happen after I talk and the committee ends its activity. We cannot stay anymore, to listen to gossip and no one to be held responsible.”

As for George Maior’s hearing, Dragnea said: “What disclosures has George Maior made? As far as I’ve heard, Maior has pretty much said <no>. He doesn’t know, has never heard, it’s not true. Are these disclosures? These are lies (…) I have never been to Maior’s of Coldea’s birthday parties. We talk about intelligence officers too much,” the PSD chair added.

Former director of the National Intelligence Service (SRI), George Maior, stated on Tuesday, in the SRI control committee that Liviu Dragnea, Codruţa Kovesi, Livia Stanciu and Victor Ponta used to attend the parties thrown at the SRI’s offices, saying there were informal meetings of some people who had formal relations.

Social Democrats about Dragnea’s alleged link to SRI

PSD deputy secretary general Codrin Stefanescu said that Liviu Dragnea is owing some explanations inside PSD about the SRI parties and also he has to take a public stance.

“I think Liviu Dragnea is owing some explanations inside the party, to explain how many such meetings had taken place, why and how. Maybe he was just compelled to attend them. Maybe he did it for pleasure,” Stefanescu.

On the other hand, as for the upcoming part congress to tackle the political frictions in PSD, Stefanescu voiced hope Dragnea would consider the fact that the party had endorsed him to become chairman and also consider the critical voices and the party’s direction.

The leader of the PSD Vrancea branch, Marian Oprisan for instance, said that Liviu Dragnea has no connection to the intelligence services in Romania, thus retorting to Stefanescu’s position.

I’ve heard Mr. Stefanescu wants explanations from Liviu Dragnea that he would be the intelligence’s person. Only a fool could say that, after Dragnea had so much to suffer. He has no connection with the intelligence,” Oprisan said.
