EC First Vice-President Timmermans meets FM Melescanu, urges Romania to continue anti-corruption fight

European Commission First Vice-President Frans Timmermans met Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu on Monday and has sent a message that the fight against corruption should continue in Romania, EC spokesperson Margaritis Schinas said.

Frans Timmermans, EC First Vice-President and EU Commissioner for Improving regulations, Institutional Relations, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights, had on Monday morning “a short, but constructive meeting” with Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu, Agenzia Nova reports.

During the meeting, Frans Timmermans has reiterated the European Commission position – the fight against corruption must continue, must not be left incomplete, said Margaritis Schinas.

“The European Commission is ready to work with Romania to update the objectives of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM),” the EC spokesperson said.

Asked about the deadline set by the European Commission for the CVM elimination by 2019, Schinas said: The problem is not the irreversibility of the promise (European Commission’s –our note), but the irreversibility of reforms (in Romania), which will make the promises be met.
