The European Commission retorted on Friday to the proposal made by the Romanian Justice minister to fire anti-corruption head Laura Codruta Kovesi, saying it is closely following the latest evolutions in Bucharest and the procedures started against the DNA head.

The EC says in a press release quoted by Digi24.ro that it is closely monitoring with concern the latest evolutions, stressing that the justice independence in Romania and its capacity to fight against corruption are headstones of a strong Romania within the European Union, as the EC president and vice-president had reminded in their joint statement last month.

The Commission also added that it would closely follow the procedures started against the ant-corruption chief prosecutor, pointing out that in the previous CVM reports, the fact that DNA has preserved the track against pressure has been perceived as a sign of durability. The EC noted in its report that, if this pressure will affect the anti-corruption fight, it might be compelled to re-assess this conclusion.

The EC first vice-president Frans Timmermans is coming for an official two-day visit in Bucharest next week.
