Electoral authority says President of Romania may take part to campaign for referendum
President Klaus Iohannis may take part to the campaign and can support the national referendum regarding issues of national interest, said the President of the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) Florin Mituletu-Buica. He added there’s no restriction in this regard in any normative act.
“There is no restriction in any normative act providing that the president cannot take part to the campaign and support the referendum. One paragraph has been erroneously understood regarding the public authorities – the ban refers to the good practices code from the Venice Commission and mainly concerns the public administration authorities,” the AEP President said.
The statement comes after the public accusations on Friday from PNL leader Ludovic Orban who said that PSD wants to silence President Klaus Iohannis during the campaign for referendum, as the Permanent Electoral Authority has put up for public debate an emergency ordinance banning the President from having a say in regard to the referendum scheduled on May 26.
