In full electoral campaign, thousands of Arges County citizens have received from the representatives of the Social-Democratic Party (PSD) Christian-Orthodox calendars. Under the picture of Virgin Mary with Child it is placed the PSD logo. The 2017 calendar is also a greeting card: ‘PSD Arges wishes you a Happy New Year!’ is the message from the Arges County Social Democrats, gandul.info reports.
Some 5,000 calendars with the PSD logo were distributed in Pitesti, Mioveni and Topoloveni and the party representatives say it is ‘a quality product of good taste.’
The head of PSD Arges electoral campaign, Ion Georgescu, says the Orthodox Church was not asked about using the calendars.
“I don’t know if the church has given its consent. The 5,000 copies were distributed in Pitesti, Topoloveni and Mioveni, localities with larger population. It’s the first year when we distribute such calendars, along with the electoral programme and the list of candidates. I understand the church gives the calendars too late with prices varying from RON 10 to 20. My colleagues said anyone needs an orthodox calendar before the winter holidays. We’ve handed them only in Arges County. It’s not electoral campaign. It is not written: Vote. The calendars have the PSD logo, but it’s not written to vote for it,” Ion Georgescu said.
Romanian Orthodox Patriarchy says “this is a way to conduct electoral campaign abusively using an icon.
“In no way the Church could have given the consent. The Church has no connection to this case. Anyone can copy an icon from the internet and put it on paper. Unfortunately, I notice they are trying to sensitize the believers with electoral issues. The Romanian Patriarchy does not agree with it and there is no agreement between the Church and PSD. It’s the PSD decision to use a religious material in an inappropriate way,” the Patriarchy spokesman Vasile Banescu said.
