European Commission Approves €241 Million Aid for Romanian Farmers
The European Commission approved, on Friday, an aid scheme worth 241 million euros (1.2 billion lei) notified by Romania to support agricultural producers, in the context of the war waged by Russia against Ukraine.
The scheme was approved under the temporary State aid crisis framework adopted by the Commission on 23 March 2022 and subsequently amended on 20 July 2022 and 28 October 2022.
Under the scheme, aid will be provided in the form of direct grants. The measure will be open to agricultural crop producers, especially producers of winter cereals and canola, who are at risk of losing their financial liquidity due to the difficulties in the agricultural market caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The support will not exceed 280,000 euros for each beneficiary and will be granted until June 30, 2024, according to a press release from the Community Executive.
The Commission concluded that the measure is necessary, appropriate and proportionate to remedy a serious disruption to the economy of a Member State, in accordance with Article 107(3)(b) of the TFEU and the conditions laid down in the temporary framework. On this basis, the Commission approved the scheme under EU state aid rules.
