Ilan Laufer, former minister of the Business Environment is accused of faking a photo shot during a meeting he had with the a Romanian community in the United States.
The former minister said he went to Portland, U.S. to set up a new branch of the Social Democrat Party and the logo of the PSD Diaspora and the name of PSD Oregon are featuring in the photo, although they were not there when the picture had been taken in the first place.
A participant to the meeting has released the original photo where the symbols of the party were completely missing. Moreover, the participant said that the purpose and the conclusions of the meeting with Ilan Laufer were totally different, that were about establishing a Romanian consulate in Portland, about the problems of the community and about investments.
At the end of last year, Ilan Laufer accused President Klaus Iohannis of antisemitism for the latter had refused to appoint him as minister of Regional Development.
Yet, the Romanian President has firmly condemned using such sensitive issues in a political row, arguing that the reference to antisemitism and Nazism in the political fight is irresponsible.
At the same time, the representatives of the Jewish community in Romania have also slammed Ilan Laufer’s stance, saying it is political and emotional.
A month after this scandal, Laufer was appointed PM Viorica Dancila’s honorary adviser.
