Ex-president Basescu to sue Igor Dodon if losing the Moldovan citizenship

Former Romanian President Traian Basescu said in Brasov on Tuesday that he would sue the Moldovan president-elect Igor Dodon if the latter withdrew his Moldovan citizenship.

Attending a commemoration ceremony in Brasov, the former head of state was asked by the journalists if he is not afraid of Dodon’s withdrawing his recently gained Moldovan citizenship.

“I am not afraid. I’ll sue him. Dodon has already lost the case against me on this topic at the Constitutional Court,” the former head of state said.

Also questioned if Igor Dodon deserved to be elected president of the Republic of Moldova, Basescu answered: “The people deserves what it has decided. We cannot say that he didn’t deserve it, as he had been elected. I endorse Maia Sandu and I regret she hasn’t won.”

Former Romania’s president Traian Basescu has sworn in as citizen of the R. of Moldova, next to his wife, Maria Basescu, about 12 days ago. The former head of state said “his dream came true”, to have double citizenship valid on the entire territory from the western frontier to Nistru River and “a little bit further”.

Traian Basescu received the Moldovan citizenship in June, after having filed for the Moldovan citizenship in March, but it was only few days ago that he could actually sworn in because the Socialist leader Igor Dodon, now the president-elect of the Republic of Moldova had challenged the former Moldova president Nicolae Timofti’s decree granting Basescu the Moldovan citizenship.
