Eduard Hellvig, the former director of the Romanian Intelligence Service, accuses AUR senator Claudiu Târziu for the revisionist speech delivered on Union Day in Iasi, when he said that Romania must be “reunited” with Bessarabia, Northern Bucovina, Herța, Transcarpathia. Hellvig states that Târziu cannot be categorized as a “useful idiot” and that he specifically chooses such potentially incendiary themes, which are also used by far-right politicians in Hungary and, above all, which “suit Vladimir Putin the most”.
“The other day, a gentleman spoke about the need to have good cooperative relations with Russia and how we, Romania, should go to recover territories from Ukraine, which is on the ropes. Of course, the speech suits Vladimir Putin best: Look, world, a bunch of countries are unhappy, so our war is justified. In politics, the gentleman with the airy words would generally bear the name “useful idiot”. That is, the one who, without analyzing too much, launches messages that suit the opponent perfectly. The problem is that Mr. Claudiu Târziu is not an idiot. Some would say not even useful. That is, don’t make these statements too quickly. We can’t suspect that he got carried away by the wave and that the pigeon came out. Mr. Târziu plays cynically with a hot topic, which he knows very well is a fantasy. From the agitation of the nationalist torch, he is greatly favored by the agitation, not by any means the national idea. Because it gets news, exposure and electoral pool from the agitation. He knows, just as cynically, that his words are a political statement and, as such, he cannot be held responsible for any collision with the official position of the Romanian state,” Eduard Hellvig said on Monday, in a message posted on the network X (former Twitter).
The former SRI director also points out that the same theme is also used by the far-right politicians in Hungary, who also claim territories that belong to Ukraine. “Mr. Târziu falsely beats a snare drum, and those without a musical ear gather from the sidelines thinking it’s a concert. But there is an improbable trumpet that is nevertheless in harmony with Mr. Târziu. László Torocskai, his counterpart in Budapest, who, coincidentally, 24 hours later, declares that Hungary must recover territories from Ukraine. Since I don’t believe in coincidences, three questions stick in my mind. When he talks about normalizing relations with Russia, what “normal” period is he referring to? So that we know how to prepare… When he launched his list for the European Parliament, why did he choose Italy and not the lands he claims? It just won’t be for votes… When he found himself in thoughts, feelings and scores with the Hungarian politician, was Mr. Târziu in Cc or in Bcc?”, Eduard Hellvig also said.
Claudiu Târziu, the president of the National Leadership Council of the extremist AUR party, declared on January 24 in Iasi, on the Day of the Little Union, that Romania must recover territories now in Ukraine and unite with the Republic of Moldova. “We will not be truly sovereign until after we reintegrate the Romanian state within its natural borders. Bessarabia cannot be forgotten. She has to come home. Northern Bucovina cannot be forgotten, southern Bessarabia cannot be forgotten, the land of Herța, Transcarpathia, everything that was and is of the Romanian nation must return to the borders of the same state. This is the ideal that we were born with and that we are not allowed to forget, to ignore. (…) Moldova is divided, Eastern Moldova and Western Moldova, because Moldova is all. Stefan’s Moldova must be at home, in Romania”, said Claudiu Târziu in Iasi, on January 24, in an assembly organized by AUR.
