The secretary of state with the Economy Ministry, Manuel Costescu on Wednesday announced he would resign from his position to run for the parliamentary elections due on December 11. He will run on the Diaspora lists of the Save Romania Union (USR) led by Nicusor Dan.
Manuel Costescu was secretary of state at the Department for Foreign Investments within the Economy Ministry. PM Dacian Ciolos appointed him for this position in June 2016.
Nicusor Dan, the USR chair, told Digi24 that the party had gathered enough signatures to register the Union’s candidates for the diaspora seats in Parliament. Wednesday was the last day when lists could be filed.
Regarding the national list of signatures for the general elections, whose deadline is expiring in two weeks, Nicuso Dan said that USR has 136,000 signatures so far in those 200,000 needed according to the law. The USR head says he is optimistic, as the past days have recorded a raising rhythm of 10,000 signatures per day.
USR had invoked the possibility of not reaching the necessary number of signatures to file the lists of candidates, so several public personalities announced they had signed for the USR candidates, among whom there was also Health Minister Vlad Voiculescu.
