Gabriel Vlase was validated on Monday for the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE) top position by the specialized committee, with only one vote against. The proposal put forward by President Klaus Iohannis is to be voted the plenary meeting of the two Chambers.

Prior to the hearings, PSD Senator Şerban Nicolae, a member of the committee, said that Vlase has shown he is good in parliamentary activity “several times, through elections,” but the SIE director position is different matter, hotnews.ro reports.

On June 14, President Klaus Iohannis sent a letter to the Parliament speakers in which he proposed the appointment of Gabriel Vlase as head of the Foreign Intelligence Service, after almost two years without a SIE head.

Five days later, the head of state said that Vlase is recommended by his experience and training, stating that he had nominated him without having a discussion with the PSD.

Petru-Gabriel Vlase is deputy speaker with the Chamber of Deputies, member of the Defence, Public Order and National Security Committee and member of the Special Committee of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate on the analysis and updating of the normative framework on national security.

Petru-Gabriel Vlase has graduated the National Defence College, the National Defence University, the Superior National Security College, the National Intelligence Academy and has the PhD degree in Military Sciences and Information with the National Information Academy.

In September 2016, the SIE director, Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, sent to the Cotroceni Palace the resignation request. Since then, the president has not made any proposal to Parliament on the nomination of a new SIE Director.

According to the legislation in force, the President sends a proposal to the Parliament for SIE Director, and the Parliament plenary accepts this proposal or not by vote.

Starting with September 29, 2016, one of the two deputies of the SIE director, General Silviu Predoiu, assures the interim management of the service.
