If elections were held next Sunday, the best-placed candidate would be George Simion (31% of voting intentions), followed by Nicușor Dan (28%), according to an IRSOP poll released on Wednesday. Victor Ponta is a distant third (18%), while Crin Antonescu is only ranked 4th, with 17%. Elena Lasconi would gather only 4%.
George Simion and Nicuşor Dan seem to have “distanced themselves from the pack”. The gap between the top two and the rest is large and will be difficult to recover. George Simion’s performance is perceived as relatively more likely than Nicuşor Dan’s performance on most attributes. The gap could matter if the two meet in the second round, say the survey authors.
In terms of visibility, only five candidates out of 11 have significant spontaneous notoriety. However, notoriety does not exceed two-thirds of voters for each candidate.
At the same time, the poll find out that Almost half of Romanians believe that the president has significant powers. This means that people have expectations that go beyond the strict scope of constitutional presidential powers.
However, the general opinion about political parties is rather unfavorable. Candidates will have to convince more through personal qualities than through party support.
In terms of taxes, the population rejects the increase in taxation. It means that an increase in taxes will not give the economic results expected by the Government.
“Two-thirds of voters (63%) live with the fear of uncertainty, war, and recession. For most people, income and prices are the crucial issue. People need to be sure that their world, income, work, social services, justice are predictable and fair,” the IRSOP also says.
For this survey, IRSOP interviewed 1,030 people by telephone between April 4-14, 2025. The sample is representative of the Romanian population over 18 years old. The sampling tolerance is +/-3%. The survey is a public information service fully funded by IRSOP.
