PM Dacian Cioloș said in Iași on Sunday that he would discuss with the political parties the topic of electing mayors in two round, informing that all possibilities are considered, including the option of the Government’s assuming responsibility in Parliament.
Asked by the journalists if he considers issuing an emergency ordinance on this topic, the premier answered that all possibilities are considered.
PM Cioloș informed he would have a discussion with the political parties on the voting system that would be adopted for the local elections this year.
The prime minister has stated that shortly after President Klaus Iohannis also said that the idea of voting the mayors in two rounds is “a very good one”, but that he questioned if the law could be amended so shortly before the elections, due in June.
Last week, the National Liberal Party asked the premier to issue an emergency ordinance to amend the law so that mayors could be elected in two rounds, like it used to be until 2012.
In return, PM Cioloș transmitted Liberals that he doesn’t think it’s democratic to amend a political law adopted by the Parliament through an emergency ordinance.
The president of the Constitutional Court, Augustin Zegrean has recently said that the Constitution is only calling for free and correct elections, it doesn’t matter if it’s one round, two or ten of them.
