PM Florin Cîţu has confirmed today that the Government had adopted the draft law that removes the cumulation of pension and salary in the public sector and which stipulates the optional increase of the retirement age to 70. According to the PM, the bill is to enter Parliament in an emergency procedure.

The draft law says that those who meet the retirement conditions under the public pension system, including the military, to be able to opt between continuing the activity and retirement. Those who are already pensioners still working in the public system must opt.

So, the employees of the public system will not be able to cumulate salary with pension anymore, as it is now, however there are still many exceptions from the law, with Labour minister claiming they are necessary so that the law can be constitutional.

So, the local elected, the members of the Constitutional Court and of the Court of Accounts are among the public employees who are exempted from the law that bans the accumulation of pension with the state salary.
The reform of the pension system in Romania was also presented by the government within the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, which was sent to Brussels early this month.

According to the document sent to the EC, increasing the retirement age will be voluntary in Romania, the early retirement rules will be amended and there will be a new indexation formula of the pensions proposed.
