The Gov’t rejected USR, ALDE’s amendments to the Budget ceiling Law on the 2020 budget deficit, a bill on which the Cabinet is taking responsibility in Parliament today.

According to the Government draft law, a budget deficit of 3.6% is proposed for 2020 and 3.34% for 2021. USR had filed amendments asking for a deficit to not exceed 3%, while ALDE lobbied for a higher deficit of 4%.

“To increase the deficit forecast over the threshold of 3% is a mistake. The deficit will be funded through the debt, which will increase the interests for the private business environment and will devalue the national currency. The Government must be in the lines in a sustainable budget envelope,” says USR.

In their turn, ALDE MPs have filed an amendment asking for a 4 pc deficit in 2020, almost 0.4% higherthan the government’s proposal, arguing this sum should be directed to investments. ALDE also called on a 3.6% deficit in 2021.
