Hungary has a substantial interest in cooperating with Romania on the basis of mutual respect, as this is “beneficial for both countries and both nations”, said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on Monday, quoted by the MTI agency, after the Hungarian ambassador in Bucharest was summoned to the Romanian MFA following Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s statements at the Summer University of Băile Tuşnad.
In a post on Facebook, Szijjarto mentioned that the summoning of the Hungarian ambassador to the Romanian MFA was no surprise. The meeting took place in a calm and polite atmosphere and manner, according to the head of Hungarian diplomacy.
Referring to the speech at Băile Tuşnad by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who said that he received from the Romanian MFA a document in which he was suggested not to speak about certain topics, Szijjarto mentioned that the deputy state secretary of the Romanian MFA who discussed with the Hungarian ambassador “practically repeated the same points”, but in an updated form, considering that Orban’s speech had already been delivered.
In his message, Szijjarto also mentions that Hungary will continue to make efforts for a cooperation with Romania based on mutual respect. “We will always talk about our plans and goals, and we will assess the current situation respectfully,” added the Hungarian foreign minister.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban sent a letter to Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu on Saturday, thanking him for the recent discussions held in Bucharest and for ensuring a calm development of the Băile Tuşnad Summer University, Orban’s press office announced in Budapest.
“I would like to thank you for welcoming me to Bucharest. I thank you and the Romanian authorities for ensuring the security of the Summer University at Băile Tuşnad and because my speech was able to take place today (Saturday – n. r.) peacefully and quietly“, reads the letter signed by the Hungarian Prime Minister. Also, the latter promised his Romanian counterpart support and cooperation in the matters discussed at the meeting held on Wednesday in Bucharest.
