The head of the Hungarian Reformed Church, Zoltan Balog, would be the one who would have convinced the resigning Hungarian president, Katalin Novak, to pardon a man convicted of complicity in the cover-up of a case in which the director of an orphanage sexually abused children, the Hungarian press reports.

The President of Hungary, Katalin Novak, has resigned as opposition parties have called for her to step down over her decision to pardon a man convicted of complicity in covering up a case in which the director of an orphanage sexually abuse children.

Zoltan Balog, leader of the Hungarian Reformed Church, former minister, advisor to Novak, played an important role in the pardon case, several independent sources close to the government and the head of state’s chancellery told Direkt36 and Telex.

The bishop defended himself by saying that it was not his personal decision, but several people in the church leadership wanted the man to be pardoned.
The former deputy director of the hostel he pardoned had been sentenced to more than 3 years in prison and banned for 5 years from working with young people under 18 for being an accomplice of the hostel director in forcing some of the boys to withdraw the charges.
The former director was sentenced to eight years in prison for sexually abusing several underage boys between 2004 and 2016. This sparked a wave of protests against Novak, who is a close ally of Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his former family minister.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on Thursday that he would amend the Constitution to exclude the possibility of pardoning pedophiles, following the controversy caused by Novak.
