Interior minister Carmen Dan announced on Wednesday night that she had found out a tapping device in her house and that she had notified the police over this case.

The minister said she had found out the audio device when she wanted to charge her telephone and the electrical socket has detached.

“It was a device in the wall. It was not a visible device that you could normally see. I found it this afternoon, after the Government sitting (Wednesday) when I wanted to charge my mobile. The device was not visible, I consider it’s an important mention. My house is my private space. It is a functional device,” Carmen Dan said.

The minister has immediately called the police and filed a complaint. She added that she isn’t benefitting of official escort service, like the Protection and Guard Service (SPP) and that no police officer is guarding her home, so no one from this service could have entered her house. “From what the Police told me, I am the first dignitary who has found a microphone in her/his private space where he/she is living,” the minister said.

Carmen Dan explained that the house where she is living in with her son is rented on her name for several months and that it is not a RA-APPS residence, meaning it is not given by the State Protocol Administration.

Meanwhile, the General Prosecutor’s Office has opened a criminal file for home invasion and invasion of privacy in this case.

In retort, the Romanian Intelligence Service said the device found in the Interior Minister’s house is most probably coming from the private area, not from the state one. SRI spokesperson Ovidiu Marincea also informed the device “is a cheap one that can be bought for RON 200-300 from any website.
