Norway, Spain and Ireland will officially recognize the state of Palestine, the prime ministers of the three countries announced on Wednesday, expressing the hope that their approach will favor peace with Israel and that other countries will follow their example. EU members Slovenia and Malta have also announced in recent weeks that they intend to recognize Palestine, arguing that a two-state solution is essential for lasting peace in the region.

In retort, Israel has recalled its ambassadors from Ireland and Norway, lashing out: “Israel will not remain silent – there will be other serious consequences.”

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Wednesday, after his Norwegian and Irish counterparts, that his country will officially recognize Palestine on May 28.

“Next Tuesday, on May 28, Spain will adopt in the council of ministers (the decision to) recognize the Palestinian state”, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared in the presence of Spanish deputies.

He accused his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu of endangering the two-state solution with his policy of “pain and destruction” in the Gaza Strip, according to AFP.

EU members Slovenia and Malta have also announced in recent weeks that they intend to recognize Palestine, arguing that a two-state solution is essential for lasting peace in the region.

Norway will officially recognize Palestine as an independent state on May 28, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store also announced on Wednesday, confirming the information that appeared in the morning in the mass media, international news agencies report. We must keep alive the only alternative that offers a political solution for Israelis and Palestinians alike: two states living side by side in peace and security,” said Gahr Store, quoted by Reuters. “Recognizing Palestine is a way to support the moderate forces that have lost ground in this prolonged and brutal conflict. At the same time, it sends a strong message to other countries to follow the example of Norway and a number of other European states and recognize the Palestinian state,” he pointed out.

In retort, Israel recalled its ambassadors from Ireland and Norway, according to The Guardian.

“We have called for the immediate recall of Israel’s ambassadors to Ireland and Norway for consultations in the context of these countries’ decisions to recognize a Palestinian state. I am sending a clear and unequivocal message to Ireland and Norway: Israel will not remain silent in the face of those who undermine its sovereignty and put their security at risk. Today’s decision sends a message to Palestinians and the world: Terrorism pays. After the terrorist organization Hamas carried out the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, after they committed heinous sexual crimes witnessed by the whole world , these countries have chosen to reward Hamas and Iran by recognizing a Palestinian state. This distorted step by these countries is an injustice to the memory of the victims of 7/10, a blow to the efforts to return the 128 hostages and a boost to the Hamas jihadists and Iran, which undermines the chance for peace and calls into question Israel’s right to self-defense. Israel will not remain silent—there will be other serious consequences. If Spain fulfills its intention to recognize a Palestinian state, a similar step will be taken against it. Irish-Norwegian stupidity does not deter us; we are determined to achieve our goals: restoring security to our citizens, dismantling Hamas and bringing the hostages home. There are no more just causes than these,” Israel’s foreign minister, Israel Katz, said on X.

Israel had already warned that recognition “will fuel extremism and instability.”

The recognition of Palestinian statehood was an important point of Ireland’s foreign policy, in support of a two-state solution to regulate Israel’s relations with the Palestinians, according to dpa.

Irish and Spanish officials discussed with other European countries the joint recognition of the Palestinian state. The heads of the three parties in the government coalition in Dublin informed their cabinet colleagues on Tuesday about the status of these negotiations. Prime Minister Simon Harris and Deputy Prime Minister Micheal Martin were involved in coordinating with other European leaders on the announcement.

Slovenia and Malta also announced they will recognize Palestine.
