Italian PM Matteo Renzi reiterated his country’s support for Romania’s joining Schengen area, official sources told Agerpres on Tuesday, following the meeting between President Klaus Iohannis and the Italian premier.

The sources say “there are reasons for optimism in saying that steps are being made this year concerning Romania’s accession to Schengen,” while also pointing out that people are increasingly more aware of the fact that Romania’s joining Schengen represents a factor that can bring an added value to the EU capacity of dealing with migration.

Renzi said that Romania’s accession to Schengen is not only in Romania’s interest, but also in Italy’s and the European Union’s interest.

During the meeting, the Italian PM assessed that Romanians living in Italy represent the most integrated community, also saying that Romanians are contributing with over 1 pc of GDP to Italy’s growth.

Sources say that over 1 million Romanians are presently living and working in Italy.
