The polling stations will close at 22:00, compared to 21:00, as it was in the previous elections. The novelty will apply to the local and European parliamentary elections on June 9, the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) announced on Tuesday. This will not be the only news for the 2024 elections.
The presidents of the polling stations can decide to extend the vote until 11:59 p.m., if the situation requires it, declared, on Tuesday, in a press conference, the president of the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP), Toni Greblă.
“Voting starts at 7 am and ends at 10 pm. However, where, exceptionally, the president of the polling station decides, because he notices that there are citizens who have not yet had time to vote, but they are inside the polling station or nearby, in the immediate vicinity of the voting station andstand in line to exercise their right to vote, the president of the polling station can decide to extend voting until 11:59 p.m., when the electronic voting registration system will be automatically closed,” said the AEP president.
At the national level, there will be almost 19,000 polling stations for the local and European parliamentary elections 2024. Abroad, where it will be possible to vote only for the European parliament, there will be 915, a double number compared to the previous elections, as he explained Toni Grebla.
Among the polling stations at the national level, 7% (ie 1,289) are located in the Municipality of Bucharest, 9% (1,782) in cities, 27% (5,186) in other municipalities and 57% (10,698) in communes. The total number of voters for the June 9 local elections is 18,968,054 people with the right to vote, according to the data presented by Toni Greblă.
The number of candidates for the June 9 elections is approaching 208,000.
The President of the Permanent Electoral Authority, Toni Greblă, declared on Tuesday that citizens cannot vote with a simple passport in the country, but with an identity card or other equivalent document. Abroad, Romanian citizens must prove that they have citizenship and residence in that country, the AEP president also said, pointing out that the MFA has a list of documents that each country issues to citizens of other citizenships who are temporarily or permanently there.
The President of AEP declared that citizens can vote in the June 9 elections only on the basis of a document issued by the Romanian state. “In the country, the palette is quite wide, I mean identity cards, electronic identity cards, temporary identity cards and electronic identity cards, diplomatic passport and service passport, in all its variants, and for the soldiers of military schools, they can to vote also based on the service card”, said Toni Greblă.
He specified that “abroad, Romanian citizens must prove that they have citizenship and residence abroad, and this can also be done depending on the host country”.
“Either they reside there or are Romanian citizens, they can vote with an identity card that differs from country to country. The MFA has a list of documents that each country issues to citizens of other citizenships who are temporarily or permanently there,” Greblă said.

“Each report will be photographed and uploaded to an application that will be uploaded to the AEP website. It will be uploaded in the same application and the report, both of which will almost instantly appear on the AEP website. From that moment, neither the photo nor the minutes will be able to be modified except by a decision that will also be published on the website, by which it was decided to recount the votes. They will also have a QR code so they can be easily identified. Without it, they cannot be loaded into the computer system“, also explained Toni Greblă.
