Justice Minister Ana Birchall welcomes EC delegation on CVM, hopes mechanism will be lifted
A European Commission delegation has arrived on Tuesday in Bucharest for an assessment mission of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM). The European officials were welcomed by Justice Minister Ana Birchall.
The minister has posted on her Facebook page a photo taken during the talks.
“The talks with the EU delegation on the CVM have started, the first assessment mission in Romania in 2019,” Birchall wrote, ziare.com informs.
“It has been a meeting based on honesty and transparency. We’ve heard each other and I believe it is a very good start, after all Romania’s main objective is the lifting of the CVM, a very important objective for Romania. I hope it is achieved as soon as possible. It depends only on us,” the Justice Minister said at the end of the talks.
Birchall added that “Romania was and is a country attached to the European values and the rule of law, of defending the human rights and the fundamental freedoms of the Romanian and European citizens.”
“As you know, all points of view from the institutions contributing to the report come to the Justice Ministry, but I can tell you shortly that it was a very good meeting. I am glad the dialogue has been resumed based on transparency, confidence and professionalism,” Ana Birchall said.
In the last CVM report dated November 2018, the European officials warned that the developments in the past year in Romania have upset Brussels and that Romania has not made progress, but has made steps back in the fight against corruption and on the independence of the judiciary.
