President Klaus Iohannis has welcomed on Thursday, at Cotroceni Palace, the President of the Swiss Confederation Alain Berset, with military honours.
The two heads of state had official talks and a common press conference, stiri.tvr.ro reports.
During the common press conference, President Iohannis announced that Switzerland will drop the restrictions for Romanians on the labour market, as of end of May next year.
“I hope I have the agreement of Mr. President Berset to reveal part of our tete-a-tete talks. (…) The conclusion is good and positive. For technical reasons, Switzerland had to impose contingencies and given the fact that discussions about Romania are positive in the Swiss society, I have to say that as of the end of May 2019 there will be no restriction,” Klaus Iohannis said.
The head of state said he has discussed with President of the Swiss Confederation Alain Berset about the Romanian community in Switzerland, as there are about 30,000 Romanians living in this country who contribute to the development of the Swiss economy and society.
In his turn, the Swiss President said that after May 2019 there will be no difference on the Swiss labour market for Romanian citizens.
“When Romania has joined the EU it has integrated also the system of free movement of persons. When the accession took place, we had to decide upon this freedom of movement for Romanians, but a popular vote was needed, and the vote was positive. The discussion has also focused on the fact that the transition has to take place smoothly. (…) In May next year we will conclude the process, after that there will be no difference,” President of the Swiss Confederation Alain Berset said.
A Presidency release reads that the talks approached issues related to the way of developing bilateral relations, the main issues on the European agenda, including the Swiss contribution to the EU Cohesion Fund, as well as regional topics.
“The visit to Romania is part of the context of intensifying the bilateral dialogue and respectively of taking over by Romania of the EU Council presidency in the first half of 2019. The talks will focus also on the Swiss relations with the European Union,” the Presidency release reads.
President Klaus Iohannis has presented, on this occasion, the Romanian EU Council presidency’s priorities and has assured the Swiss side that Romania will continue to support, from this position, the promotion of an open, constructive and reciprocal advantageous dialogue between the European Union and the Swiss Confederation on all issues of the relation.
The visit of the Swiss high-ranking official has started on Wednesday upon the invitation addressed by President Klaus Iohannis.
