French Prosecutor Jean-François Bohnert will be appointed to head the French Financial Prosecutor’s Office, a position for which he was heard on Thursday, July 11.

Jean-François Bohnert is virtually retired from the race by France, rfi.ro informs.

French President Emmanuel Macron favored him for the Financial Prosecutor’s Office, theoretically leaving free path for former DNA chief Laura Codruta Kovesi.

Bohnert and Kovesi were the two candidates for the top position of the European Prosecutor’s Office, both of them being supported by a European institution (European Parliament and the European Council).

Negotiations in the spring could not reach an agreement, the two institutions agreed to convene again in autumn this year.

Theoretically, the problem is simplified for Kovesi (favored by the European Parliament) as she remains alone in the race.

But the European Council’s internal procedures are more complicated than those of the European Parliament. The legal service of the institution may be the one that forces the Member States to introduce another candidate in the race.

He will have to be heard by a team of specialists before the Member States pass to the political vote.

This spring, the political vote favored French prosecutor Jean-François Bohnert. France is expected in the coming days to express public support for Kovesi, the same source informs.

PM Viorica Dancila says support for Kovesi is not opportune

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila said on Friday, at the reception occasioned by the National Day of France, where Kovesi was also present, that support for the former DNA chief prosecutor is not opportune and she has to clarify some issues before running for the European Prosecutor position.

“It is very good Mrs. Kovesi has been invited. My personal opinion is that each one needs to clarify certain issues when running for a position and this would be to her benefit. As long as there are some issies related to her, I personally do not believe support is opportune,” Viorica Dancila said.

“You know very well that Mrs. Kovesi was revoked by a minister in my government and I have the same position as before,” she added.

One week ago, Viorica Dancila said a decision regarding the support for Kovesi would be made by the PSD statutory leadership.
