The Kremlin stated on Wednesday that Russia is in favor of aiding Transnistria, while also warning that ‘the bacillus of Russophobia’ is spreading in Moldova, and cautioning Chisinau against making a ‘monstrous’ decision,” reports EFE news agency.
“The people who are in Transnistria live in very harsh conditions. Of course, they need a lot of help. Russia is open to this help, but we prefer until the last moment to solve any problem through dialogue, political dialogue”, said Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman of the Russian presidency, during a conference with a group of students.
At the so-called Congress of “deputies at all levels” in Transnistria, which met in Tiraspol last week at the request of separatist leader Vadim Krasnoselski, an official resolution was passed calling for Russia’s “protection” against what he described as being a concerted pressure on the Transnistrian economy from the Moldavian government.
The separatist authorities later declared that it was a request for strictly political assistance for the reactivation of negotiations “in order to resolve the conflict”, not one for military assistance. Peskov declared on Wednesday that the situation between Transnistria and the Republic of Moldova “is far from predictable and calm”.
“People live there who largely disagree with what the Chisinau authorities are doing. Of course, we hope that the Moldovan authorities will take into account the opinion of these people”, declared the spokesman of the Kremlin.
He also expressed his “confidence” that the Republic of Moldova “will not follow the advice of any power outside the region” and will not choose “the path of confrontation and repression of the people”. “This will lead to a catastrophe”, he added, denouncing that “the bacillus of Russophobia is multiplying” in the Republic of Moldova.
Peskov also criticized the fact that some leaders from Chisinau believe that to bet on the approach to the European Union means to be “enemies” of Russia. “It is a terrible mistake. We hope that Chisinau will understand how monstrous it is,” he said. In their appeal to Russia, but also to the UN and other international organizations, the Transnistrians recalled that “more than 220,000 Russian citizens” live permanently in this territory, where less than half a million people live.
