Liviu Dragnea: Anything can happen if Iohannis turns down the PSD proposal for Premier

Social-democrat leader Liviu Dragnea said on Wednesday evening that President Klaus Iohannis cannot turn down the PSD proposal for Premier if the party will win the majority. In an interview for ‘Ziarul Financiar’ Dragnea said PSD will submit one proposal for Premier if it wins the majority in parliament. He claims that a Constitutional Court decision in 2014 reads that the president cannot turn down a proposal filed by a majority formed by a party or by a coalition of parties.

“The reason for the article in the Constitution saying negotiations are to take place with the parties in order to name a premier is valid for one situation: if the election result leads to a structure of parliament that does not allow forging a majority – the parties do not agree on a formula to forge a 50% plus one majority. Then comes the essential role for the president to talks to all of them and to try to find out the person having chances to gather a majority in parliament to form the government. However, when a majority goes to the president and point to their person ‘in which we have confidence’ and the parliament votes in favour, what is the logic for saying ‘I do not agree on this option and I want to appoint someone else’?” the PSD leader argued.

“This does not work. Anything can happen,” Dragnea said.

Asked what office he is aiming after the elections, he replied: “PSD chairman”, adding that he will discuss about public offices after December 11 (the date of general elections – our note).
