The Foreign Ministry went public on Thursday with a message on X, in which it does not directly name Călin Georgescu, but in which it reiterates Romania’s position on Ukraine. The message came after, the day before, the former presidential candidate spoke about Romania’s takeover of some territories in Ukraine.

“RO MFA strongly reiterates steadfast position in support of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. This position is clear and rooted in international law, national interest and a long lasting values-based foreign policy,” MAE said on X.
This is the first time that at this level, Romania has come out with a public message in response to the statements made by Călin Georgescu.
Former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu declared on Wednesday evening in an interview with journalist Ion Cristoiu that he wants a division of Ukraine, after it is defeated by Russia and that in this case “Romania has Northern Bukovina, Bugeac (southern Bessarabia), Northern Maramureș”.
“The world is changing, borders will change. If borders change, where are we? We have Northern Bukovina – interesting, we have Bugeac, we have Northern Maramureș from the former Transcarpathia, a part of it remains with the Hungarians, Lviv remains with the Poles and, of course, Malorussia remains (n.r. – the term means “Little Russia”, a 14th-century name for Ukraine. Currently, Ukrainians consider it offensive), Georgescu said.

Georgescu also said that he believes 100% that there will be a division of Ukraine.Ukraine is an invented state. Which Russians? The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, that’s what we’re talking about. It’s an invented state, there are no landmarks,” he claimed.
Kyiv reacts to Călin Georgescu’s revisionist statements: “He is repeating Russian propaganda”
Ukraine, through the voice of the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, condemns the “provocative” statements made by Călin Georgescu, who spoke, in an interview with Ion Cristoiu, about Romania’s takeover of some territories in Ukraine.
“Romanian politician Calin Georgescu’s statements, which question the territorial integrity of our state, represent extreme disrespect for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.

We consider categorically unacceptable and condemn revisionist statements or actions that encroach on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, contradict international norms, the UN Charter, as well as basic democratic values.

Against this backdrop, Calin Georgescu’s attempts to position himself as an “independent” politician look absurd: his statements parrot Russian propaganda, which indicates complete dependence on his masters in Moscow.

We are convinced that it is in the interests of Romania and the Romanian people to restore a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the neighboring Ukraine, as well as the development of our two states in peace, security, and prosperity for our people. It should be recalled that such a development is not envisaged by the plans of the Kremlin and its puppets.

We appreciate that Romania and the Romanian people have firmly supported Ukraine since the very beginning of Russia’s full-scale war against our country. We count on further development of friendly relations between Ukraine and Romania, which have the character of a strategic partnership, for the benefit of our two peoples,” reads a statement of the Ukrainian MFA.
