Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has had a new slippage, arguing that following the historical logic, the Romanian language should be called Moldavian, and not the other way around.

The statement is part of the Kremlin’s propaganda line criticizing Western officials. Zakharova claims that they are different dialects, although linguists from both banks of the Prut have proven that the Moldovan language does not exist.

Maria Zakharova’s statement came after the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova voted a law according to which the phrase “Romanian language” will replace the phrase “Moldovan language” in all official documents. The decision was taken on Thursday, in Chisinau.

On the other side, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the decision of the Chisinau Parliament regarding the recognition of the Romanian language as the official language of the Republic of Moldova.

“The adoption of the mentioned law has a deep symbolic meaning, as it restores the scientific truth regarding the name of the official language of the Republic of Moldova and confirms the status of the Romanian language as the official language of the Republic of Moldova. It also reconfirms the community of language, history and culture between Romania and the Republic Moldova. The adoption of the law also demonstrates the maturity of the society in the Republic of Moldova and its adherence to the space of values on which the European Union is based,” stated the MFA.
