Social-democrat Deputy Chairman, Mihai Fifor, has resigned as Defence Minister on Monday, hours before the PSD Executive Committee which is expected to discuss the Government reshuffling.
Fifor claims he will support the party to strengthen the team, digi24.ro reports.
“Thank you for your support, I’ve tried to have good performance in this position and I hope I haven’t failed in doing so. I’ve conducted an analysis and I believe I can join the party team in order to get prepared for the coming two years. I have asked Mrs. Dancila and Chairman Dragnea to have my mandate terminated and to join the party in order to strengthen the team,” Mihai Fifor said.
Shortly after the announcement, PSD leader Liviu Dragnea has joined Prime Minister Viorica Dancila, but refused to make any statements before the PSD Executive Committee.
According to sources, the position of Defence Minister will allegedly be taken over by Dorel Caprar.
The PSD Executive Committee sitting has started at 11.00h, following an informal meeting on Sunday with Liviu Dragnea and Viorica Dancila about the Government reshuffling and Gabriela Firea’s political activity.
Member of the Social Democratic Party, Mihai Fifor was elected to the Senate in 2012, representing Dolj County. In 2016, he won another term, switching to Arad County. In June 2017, he became Economy Minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Mihai Tudose, despite his lack of expertise in the economic arena. In September 2017 he became Defence Minister. He was reappointed to the same position in January 2018 in the Dăncilă Cabinet.
