Former Social Democrat leader Mircea Geoana, ousted from PSD last year, informed on Monday that he would set up a new party, the Romanian Social Party, to oppose PSD.

According to Geoana, PSR is a retort “to the serious divergence from the left identity of PSD led by Victor Ponta who decided to abandon the Romanian left voters.”

“PSR will set on track work, honor and the dignity of the human being, replacing corruption, lie, imposture and fake culture which are prevailing in the public debate. Romania needs the talent and the expertise of all Romanian citizens, no matter where they are living and working, in the country or abroad,” reads a press release.

Senator Mircea Geoana launched a new social democrat project at Romexpo early February, called “Our Romania”. Geoana claimed this initiative will generate a power shift in Parliament and a new government will be established in March.
