Republic of Moldova President Igor Dodon stated that he would ask the government to revoke the ambassador to Bucharest, Mihai Gribincea (photo) , who said that the decree withdrawing Traian Basescu’s Moldovan citizenship could be declared unconstitutional.

“I’m surprised to discover that some ambassadors have become advocates for politicians in the country of residence and have forgotten about what state they serve. It’s even worse when they make political comments in relation to the state authorities which sent them in mission,” Dodon wrote on his Facebook page.

“I will ask the Government to revoke the ambassador and replace him with a person who better understands both diplomatic skills, as well as the interests of the Moldovan state,” the message further reads.

On Monday, during the talk-show ‘24 Minutes’ at Digi24.ro, the Moldovan Ambassador in Bucharest, Mihai Gribincea, said the dispute around Basescu’s citizenship cannot shake the overall bilateral relationship between the two countries, but he estimated, based on some experts’ evaluations, that the decree signed by President Igor Dodon could be declared unconstitutional.

Republic of Moldova President Igor Dodon signed on January 3 the decree to withdraw the citizenship for former Romanian President Traian Basescu, local media inform. The document refers only to Traian Basescu and not to his wife Maria Basescu.

“I’ve signed the decree to withdraw the R. of Moldova citizenship from Mr. Traian Basescu,” Igor Dodon wrote on his Facebook page.

“Previously, as deputy of Moldova’s parliament, I said the citizenship was granted illegally. Traian Basescu repeatedly called for cancelling the statehood of R. of Moldova by annexation to Romania. Ever since during his presidency, he refused to recognise the Moldovan statehood and the existence of the Moldovan people,” Dodon wrote.
