The Romanian President Klaus Iohannis signed the joint statement regarding the strengthening of the air defense of Ukraine, together with his American counterparts Joe Biden, and the Ukrainian, Volodymyr Zelenski, and the Dutch, Dick Schoof, Italian, Giorgia Meloni, and German, Olaf Scholz, inform a statement from the White House, released Tuesday evening.

The Romanian president declared on Wednesday, at the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) summit being held in Washington, that Russia remains “the biggest risk for European security” and that Thursday’s talks will be “relevant for the defense of international order”, still confirming once that Romania donated a Patriot anti-missile system to Ukraine and that our country’s claim is “to be reasonably compensated” for this decision.
“Russia remains the biggest risk for European security, but also for Euro-Atlantic security. In the face of the Kremlin’s hybrid attacks, NATO states must be prepared. Unity and solidarity are clearly our strategic advantage and have been seen in the years since Russia’s aggression against Ukraine began. The summit will mark significant progress for deterrence, especially on the eastern flank,” Iohannis said in a press conference.
“For us it is important that the Black Sea region is considered strategically important. A more structured approach means a package of concrete measures, including increasing the allied presence. We facilitated a corridor in the Black Sea for the transit of Ukrainian goods and invested in infrastructure. Romania is one of the most active supporters of Ukraine’s economic viability. The Allies adopt measures to strengthen anti-aircraft defenses on the eastern flank. This certainly concerns us and we remember situations in which drones fell on the national territory”, continued the Romanian president.
“We seek to ensure that the Alliance’s defense plans on the eastern flank can be carried out accurately. We emphasized the importance of military mobility and here in Washington, Romania will join a military mobility corridor alongside Bulgaria and Greece. We want to host command units,” he added.
“Romania supports that the North Atlantic perspective for Ukraine be affirmed. We will agree to increased support for other vulnerable war-affected partners. For us, we attach the greatest importance to the Republic of Moldova. In the final statement, the Republic of Moldova is adequately reflected. It must be supported to counter Russia’s hybrid attacks,” Iohannis further said.
The Romanian president also stated that Romania expects to be “reasonably” rewarded for donating a Patriot system to Ukraine. He specified that there are negotiations with the NATO allies so that our country receives sooner systems that ensure the national airspace.
“We support Ukraine, we support the Republic of Moldova, we donate to Patriot – because we can and because we think it’s right. Romania has transformed from a state that begged to receive help of any kind to a state that has the strength, energy and capabilities to export security throughout the region. Romania has become safer, stronger and more involved, especially in the last 10 years. Our claim is that when we donate high-capacity systems, such as Patriot, we will be reasonably compensated”, declared Iohannis.
He added that the CSAT had given a mandate to the Minister of Defense and negotiations are underway. “Our desire is to receive another Patriot system in exchange, certainly not tomorrow, but in the relatively near future. But I believe that we will also get systems that will be delivered faster to compensate for the donation of this Patriot system,” the head of state said.
The joint statement

President Iohannis is attending the NATO meeting in Washington on Wednesday and Thursday, during which several topics of importance for the future of the Alliance will be discussed, including a substantial package of support for Ukraine.

“We are providing Ukraine with additional strategic air defense systems, including additional Patriot batteries donated by the United States, Germany, and Romania; Patriot components donated by the Netherlands and other partners to enable the operation of an additional Patriot battery; and an additional SAMP-T system donated by Italy. These five strategic air defense systems will help to protect Ukrainian cities, civilians, and soldiers, and we are coordinating closely with the Ukrainian government so that these systems can be utilized rapidly. We are working on a further announcement this year of additional strategic air defense systems for Ukraine,” the joint statement said among others.

President Joe Biden also announced in his speech on the occasion of the ceremony that marked the 75th anniversary of NATO that the US and its allies will send new Patriot systems to Ukraine, which he expressed his belief would win the war with Russia. In his address at the opening of NATO’s anniversary summit, the American president mentioned Romania twice, listing it among the countries that will contribute to the anti-aircraft defense of Ukraine and among the states where the alliance is strengthening its presence with a battle group.

In Europe, Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine continues. And Putin wants nothing less — nothing less than Ukraine’s total subjugation; to end Ukraine’s democracy; to destroy Ukraine’s culture; and to wipe Ukraine off the map. And we know Putin won’t stop at Ukraine. But make no mistake, Ukraine can and will stop Putin, especially with our full, collective support. And they have our full support,” Biden told the audience, showing that NATO’s full support can help Ukraine stop Putin’s aggression. “This moment in history requires our collective strength,” he stressed.

“Today, I’m announcing the historic donation of air defense equipment for Ukraine. The United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, and Italy will provide Ukraine with the equipment for five additional strategic air defense systems.

And in the coming months, the United States and our partners intend to provide Ukraine with dozens of additional tactical air defense systems.

The United States will make sure that when we export critical air defense interceptors, Ukraine goes to the front of the line. They will get this assistance before anyone else gets it,” the US President announced.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged U.S. political leaders in Washington on Tuesday to take decisive action to support his country against Russia’s invasion without waiting for the outcome of America’s November presidential election.

“Everyone is waiting for November. Americans are waiting for November, in Europe, Middle East, in the Pacific, the whole world is looking towards November and, truly speaking, (Russian President Vladimir) Putin awaits November too,” Zelenskiy said, speaking at the Ronald Reagan Institute on the eve of the NATO summit.

“It is time to step out of the shadows, to make strong decisions … to act and not to wait for November or any other month,” the Ukrainian president underlined.

Why doesn’t Turkey donate the more compatible S-400 systems to Ukraine? They can replace them with Patriots.
