The new Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, came to Bucharest on Wednesday, being his first official visit to a foreign country since taking office at the beginning of September. The diplomat was received by his Romanian counterpart, Luminița Odobescu and the two held a joint press conference.
The new Ukrainian FM said that he is “grateful” for the “historic” decision of our country to donate a Patriot system to Ukraine.
“It is very important to strengthen the defense of Ukraine. It is a shield not only for Ukraine, but also for Europe. Today we defend not only Ukraine, but also Europe. We have numerous cases of violations of NATO states’ airspace by Russian missiles or drones. That is why this system, especially around winter, will allow us to strengthen our defense capabilities. They defend our energy infrastructure and as you can see now, Russia’s efforts are aimed at preventing us from producing electricity”, the minister pointed out.
He emphasized that Russian missiles and drones “pass or fall near nuclear power stations in Ukraine and can be extremely dangerous.” “That’s why I want to ask our partners in Romania to analyze the possibility of shooting down the Russian drones and missiles near the Romanian airspace“, added the Ukrainian minister.
In her turn, the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luminiţa Odobescu, reaffirmed Romania’s “total support” “for the defense of the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”.
“Today I reconfirmed to the minister that Romania will continue to stand by Ukraine, offering full, multidimensional and consistent support for the Ukrainian cause in its legitimate fight against the Russian aggressor. We are in the 937th day of this war of aggression launched by Russia for no reason, every day we have seen the international rules-based order being blatantly violated. Every day we saw how innocent civilians, women and children are victims of war crimes, but also 937 days of evidence of courage and patriotism of the Ukrainian armed forces and civilians, as many days of heroic resistance against the abuses of an aggressor state, so many days of defense of Ukraine’s right to choose its own destiny in democracy, freedom and prosperity”, declared, on Wednesday, Luminiţa Odobescu, at the end of the visit made by the new Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, to Bucharest.
Odobescu conveyed his “admiration” for the fight waged by Ukraine, a fight which is “including for the security and stability of the entire European continent”.
“I reiterate the total support for the defense of the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine as well as on the path of European integration and, further, in the process of reconstruction of the country”, the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs stated.
She reaffirmed solidarity with the Ukrainian people, showing that “an independent, democratic and European Ukraine is in Romania’s strategic interest”.
