Pitesti mayor sacked over conflict of interest issue

Arges county prefect has signed a decree dismissing mayor of Pitesti city, Cornel Ionica, after the latter had been found guilty of conflict of interest by the National Integrity Agency. The decision can be challenged.

The spokesperson of the Arges Prefecture says the Pitesti mayor is thus dismissed before ending his mandate. The next local elections are due in June 2020. The mayor has the right to challenge the decision in court in ten days.

Mayor Cornel Ionica said he had not received the order yet, but that he was expecting such a decision.

I saw that coming. The prefect told me he would issue such a order for my dismissal. I will probably challenge it in court. Let me see it first, and then I will talk to my lawyers about the next steps. I have created no prejudice. I am paying the price for my mistakes, but they can hardly be called mistakes, made ten years ago,” the dismissed mayor told local media.

In March 2016, the National Integrity Agency announced that Cornel Ionica had participated in adopting two resolutions by the Pitesti Local Council as deputy mayor, in 2009 and 2010.

The resolutions were related to the protocols concluded between the Cultural Centre in Pitesti and private companies where the mayor’s son-in-law was partner and owner.
