Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu asked the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday to come up with the financial impact for not taxing pensions between 2,000 lei and 3,000 lei. I am waiting for the recommendation of the Ministry of Finance to see if we can afford, after the 13.8% increase and the recalculation from September 1, to have this tax exemption of up to 3,000 lei,” said PM Ciolacu.

On Wednesday, the Prime Minister made clarifications in the Government meeting related to all kinds of assumptions regarding the IMF visit and the pension situation.

“Recalculation of pensions will happen at the announced deadline, namely on September 1. There are no more installments and there are no other options. Moreover, I ask the Ministry of Finance to come to me in the following days with the impact of increasing pensions between 2,000 lei and 3,000 lei. As we well know, no pension is taxed up to 2,000 lei. Let’s see the impact between 2,000 and 3,000 lei to increase this margin to 3,000 lei without taxation, so we can see if we can afford it. And I am waiting for the recommendation of the Ministry of Finance, if we allow ourselves, after the 13.8% increase and the recalculation from September 1, to have this tax exemption of up to 3000 lei,” said Marcel Ciolacu.

The Minister of Investments and European Projects, Adrian Câciu, said on Tuesday that the proposal regarding the increase to 3,000 lei of the threshold up to which contributory pensions are not taxed can be discussed, and the Minister of Finance must come up with a budgetary impact on this subject. According to some political sources, the liberals proposed, in the coalition meeting on Monday, the increase from 2,000 lei to 3,000 lei of the threshold up to which contributory pensions are not taxed.

According to the Labour minister, more than 1.28 million Romanians who have pensions between 2,001 lei and 3,000 lei would be targeted by this possible non-taxation.
